Don Quixote. The title character of the novel, Don Quixote is a gaunt, middle-aged gentleman who, having gone mad from reading too many books about chivalrous knights, determines to set off on a great adventure to win honor and glory in the name of his invented ladylove, Dulcinea. Don Quixote longs for a sense of purpose and beauty—two things he believes the world lacks—and hopes to bring order to a tumultuous world by reinstating the chivalric code of the knights-errant. In the opening line of the eponymous masterpiece by Miguel de Cervantes, we meet the character of Don Quixote. He lives, as Cervantes puts it, “in a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind”. It’s a lovely literary trick that sets up the style of the whole novel.

Advanced study of Don Quixote and the literary criticism it has generated. Other works by Cervantes may be included. Conducted in Spanish. Satisfies Area I for the major in Hispanic Studies and counts towards the interdisciplinary minor in Global Literary Theory. Students entering before 2012: satisfies the Literature requirement. La Mancha is described by Miguel de Cervantes in his 17th-century novel Don Quixote, and visitors to the region today still can encounter the 16th-century windmills at which Cervantes’s fictional would-be knight-errant “tilted,” believing them to be gigantic rivals.
